Let's get this ARRPty started

UnBrogue 1.0 (OSX + source, and thanks to Joshua Day for the Linux source and Windows+source builds)

[Edit: If you're coming from reddit, I've added a page at Rogue Basin explaining the spoiler free changes.]

[Edit 2: The above now links to 1.0.1 which is a bug fix release fixing the bugs identified in the comments section]

I need to quit looking at other people's stuff and pound out my own release...

I would like to apologise now for putting out a release so early in the panic-last-minute process of getting a roguelike out the door on ARRP...

To make up for it, I still have to get a release of Unangband out by (the end of) Sunday night as well.

I like what I've played so far. It seems much more difficult than Brogue, but not in a bad way. I'm not the best roguelike player but I can routinely make it to depth 12 or 14 in Brogue but the furthest I've gotten in UnBrogue so far has been depth 5, and that was just once.

I've found a couple of (what I think are) minor bugs so far. How should one go about reporting them?

Thanks for the feedback. Report bugs in the comments thread here.

What's been killing you so far?

Here are the bugs I've found so far.

1) Maybe not a bug, but a Scroll of Duplication can be used on itself. Sadly it doesn't lead to a chain of infinite duplications: after you use it, you're just left with a single scroll, presumably the copy, though the message buffer displays " his is a Scroll of Duplication." (The missing 't' on 'this' is intentional on my part.) I didn't manage to find two scrolls of duplication at once, so I don't know yet if I can wish for infinite wishes, as it were.

2) As seen here, I entered a vault only to find that all of the items were covered in cages and refused to open until the missing item was replaced. Except, as far as I could see all of the items were actually there. This is perhaps not a bug but an added puzzle?

3) I'm glad I got a screenshot of this one because the game crashed shortly after that. Luckily there was an autosave from when I entered that floor but when I approach the area with that potion again it immediately crashes. Unfortunately I hadn't identified the potion in question, so I can only assume it was a Potion of Crash Game. ;)

As for what's been killing me, here's my high score list after 7 plays (which is admittedly not many). I'll explain a few of them in more detail (possible spoilers!)

High score 1 was due to being hit while wearing a cursed chain mail. It must have had a negative runic that made flames occasionally burst out of it when I was hit.

HIgh score 2 was from a creeping death potion. I think it was a desperate blind quaff while at low health hoping that it was a potion of healing.

High score 3 is self-explanatory. High score 4 I believe was a thrown potion mishap. High score 5 was use identifying a wand on level 1, changing the enemy into a Goblin Warlord, which called in a bunch of friends after I hit him.

High score 6 was from a key trap. I don't recall arrow turrets hitting that hard in brogue! Similarly, I don't recall goblins hitting that hard, either, for high score 7.

That's probably too few plays and from too mediocre a player to be of any help, but hopefully the bug reports are useful to you. I'll be sure to report any more I come across.

Thanks for a great variant of an already great game!

Using seed 1347692424, I found a "puzzle" key room with, apparently, no puzzle. Just walked up and took the key. There were some suspicious-looking puddles of water in a nearby-ish room, but they were (apparently) eel-less.

I'm still playing this game through, so I guess it could be a really slow-burn puzzle… which isn't a bad idea in itself.

Thanks for the bug reports guys.

Scroll of Duplication is intentional. You get 1 scroll of duplication for each scroll of duplication you consume...

The locked vaults is a subtle bug I introduced at the last minute after testing it. (Who needs that flag?)

Missing eels is a behaviour change which I'll roll back.

Corrupt potion I'll have to dig into a bit more.

I've updated the original post to include a link to the OSX version of 1.0.1 which is a bug fix release which addresses the issues identified above. Link is http://prdownload.berlios.de/unangband/UnBrogue-1.0.1-osx.dmg if you're following the comments.
