Someone hurry up with a roguelike X-com remake already. X-Com is another one of those roguelike-likes I've been talking about. Random terrain, destructible scenery. It seems custom designed for an ASCII make-over.
In the mean time, you can read about this Quake II based remake featured on Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

As is riddle through the comments on the rock paper shotgun piece, destructible terrain is what makes XCOM one of the best games of all times. Lack of it makes me hesitant to bother with ufoai. Your character, low on time left this round, moves around the corner of a building thought to be safe, only to come face to face with an enemy. Knowing that a nearby unit has some heavy weapons but may be able to remove sufficient walls to save that character... that's a fun time. -- Vaevictus
